Chapter 14

“It’s alright,” Sophia cooed through the door to Nox. She pushed the door open with her foot and walked in, shutting the door behind her and flicking the lock.

Nox was pacing in the hallway in front of the door. Sophia’s entry only agitated the cat even more. It was no longer simple meows but growls and hisses too. Sophia felt like a child being reprimanded for doing something they weren’t supposed to do.

“I know I’m late, but I brought food,” Sophia soothed, lifting the bags of food to show Nox.

Nox hissed and jumped onto the counter, tail twitching. Her paws swiped at Sophia, who narrowly missed them as she entered the kitchen. She wasn’t in the mood to play games with Nox.

Before Sophia could even begin to tell off Nox, her mind was filled with images of fear, worry, and pain. The overwhelming emotions came to a deafening end when the last image in her mind appeared to be a resemblance of a wraith. Although, in all honesty, it was an image that more closely resembled a death-eater than a wraith.

“How?” Sophia croaked out. Her hands stilling inside the takeout bags, her eyes glued to Nox.

Nox slowly padded closer, sat down, and gazed deeply into Sophia’s eyes. Sophia took a deep breath, feeling Nox's build- up of psychic power.

“We’re connected,” Nox worded in her mind.

She didn’t find comfort in that. Instead, it filled her with uncertainty. What would happen to Nox if she got hurt? Would it hurt her? How was it even possible? What else did this connection do besides alert Nox to what was happening to her? Could Nox see and hear what she did? She found herself overwhelmed by questions.

Nox pushed images and feelings of comfort, care, and love into her mind. Allowed those emotions to still Sophia’s racing heart and thoughts, to lessen the burden of an already difficult night.

“Thank you,” Sophia whispered.

Nox purred and pressed against her arm.

“Why don’t you go pick something for us to watch, and I’ll plate our food,” Sophia instructed.

On Nox’s plate, she piled the fresh tuna, hake, and salmon, added some fries, and filled a bowl with fresh cream. She placed a burger with jalapeño poppers and lots of curly fries into her plate. She set Nox’s food on the coffee table and returned to the kitchen, grabbing her plate and the large soda she had ordered.

They sat quietly and ate their food, both distracted by their own thoughts and the movie was background noise in their ears. The burger disappeared in a few rushed bites but she slowed down when she got to the fries and the poppers, wanting the burn of the jalapeños to be the only lingering pain inside her body tonight.

With her plate licked clean, Nox cleaned her snout and curled up beside Sophia, gently purring. Sophia stroked Nox with one hand while the other absentmindedly fed her.

They always found comfort in each other, even in their disagreements. It was the one thing that kept them close.
